Destin is a beautiful family-oriented vacation destination on the quiet Gulf of Mexico shores of Florida's panhandle.

Now that the worst of the oil spill is behind us, the future looks really good for Destin as her beaches we minimally impacted. However, in the short-term, it's really unfortunate that uncertainty surrounds Destin and many of the other magnificent beach vacation spots on the Florida Panhandle. The best advice is to call ahead.

In many of the years past, the beaches in and around Destin have always ranked in the Top 10 Best Beaches in the United States - but not this year.

However, Florida that it's such a large state that many areas are not expected to feel the effects of this disaster. If your vacation plans are flexible and you want to plan your trip before you go, you might want to consider some of the areas that are further to the south of the Panhandle - Tampa Bay (including Clearwater Beach, St Pete Beach and Sarasota) and beyond.


Destin - stunningly beautiful seascapes and shoreline

Destin was on the peripheral edge of the BP oil spill and while many areas have not been affected in a major way, the uncertainty surrounding a ruined beach holiday is somewhat remote.

Other Florida beach cities far removed from the oil spill include the Tampa Bay area beaches of Clearwater and St Petersburg. Further south is Sarasota and her Islands and more south of that is the Lee Island Coastal islands of Sanibel and Captiva.

If your heart's set on Destin, it would be prudent to call the area's travel resources and find out what the status is. Be mindful, however, what is acceptable to some, may not be to you. Donut Hole
The cute name belies the fact that the menu includes sandwiches and burgers, too. Very popular - for good reason - and the building's charm adds to the appeal. Can get busy, expect to wait on the weekend. Crab omelet, anyone? 635 Highway 98 in Destin

If you're looking for something out of the ordinary for lunch or dinner, the Finz should be on your radar. Blended - or fusion - cuisine that brings together the spice and flavor of the Far East with traditional Continental. The Back Porch
Where the kids can build up an appetite at this beachfront restaurant's playground while you order and relax. Seafood is the fare of the day, but take time to study the 5-page menu with refreshment from the full-bar. Afterwards a stroll through the restaurant's gift shop where there's something for everyone. 1740 Scenic Highway 98


Places to Stay

Beachside Inn
This little gem is a two story motel, pet friendly, offers low rates, has onsite dining and coffee shop, well-appointed and clean rooms - it's a great deal. The only drawback is that is across the street from the beach - there is beach access but, again, not directly on the beach. 2931 Scenic Highway 98 in Destin.

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort
A multifaceted resort with beachfront condo type accommodations, villas on the waterfront, and villas and homes throughout the 2,400 acres. 15 lighted tennis courts, boating, jet skis, bicycling and 72 hole golf - all on site. 9300 Emerald Coast Parkway West.  

Bay Club Sandestin
This resort condominium features 44 units on six floors and offers beautiful views of the bay. Numerous activities available - many are complimentary including golf. Three night minimum stay is required. 120 North Sandestin Blvd.  

Cayo Grande Suites Hotel
Hotel complex of 79 units with a variety of room and suite configurations. Perfect landing spot for vacationers looking for convenient location to beach, Pensacola, Destin and Fort Walton Beach. 214 Racetrack Road in Fort Walton Beach.  

Holiday Inn on the Beach - Destin
This oceanfront hotel of 233 units on 9 stories features an indoor heated and outdoor pool. Recreational programs during the summer and sauna, fitness center and whirlpool are available. 1020 Highway 98.
